What is WiMax?
At present, we could say that the standard for wireless Internet is Wi-Fi, which can be summarized as follows: a network of antennas radiates a signal and the equipment with this technology that are within the radius of action of the antennas of Wi-Fi, called "hotspots", can connect to the Internet wirelessly, at a broadband transfer rate. It should be noted that the maximum transmission speed of the most modern Wi-Fi regulations is 1.3 Gbps.
Thanks to this characteristic, in certain parts of the world this technology had a wide development, which led to a kind of social movement forming communities of users in which each one, with their antenna, tries to fully cover a sector of a community or neighborhood as a community . Why is it necessary to have several members of a community for that? Because Wi-Fi antennas have a maximum range of 150 meters, which in practice is reduced to about 90, at least the maximum range of a home installation.
And here is the point of the question: the new WiMax Advanced technology proposes higher speeds, and the most important perhaps is that each antenna of this system extends its range of action up to approximately 70 kilometers, depending on the environmental conditions. The thing, obviously, changes. Even more so when it is taken into account that, when WiMax reaches the level of Wi-Fi massification, it becomes a real competition, especially since it can reach lower installation costs, antennas and equipment.
As we said, Wi-Fi technology had extensive development and growth in the last five years in various parts of the world, but in Latin America its appearance coincided with deep processes of economic crisis, especially in Argentina, which made equipment considerably more expensive. and its installation for users and companies.
With the promised range of 50 to 70 kilometers, another panorama opens up. Wireless Internet would no longer be an exclusively urban attraction (a situation that is unavoidable and makes it necessary to put antennas every 90 meters), on the contrary. The Internet could be brought to suburban and rural areas where the installation of cables is even more difficult due to the low number of users.
In short, WiMax is presented as the best alternative for these rural settings, but also for large private areas of companies, since it makes it possible to bring broadband, which includes telephone and associated services, to really distant areas and with a low cost.
